In 1938, a small town known only as the Town of Kansas sprung up in a region that was to become southwestern Missouri. Twelve years later, this outpost was incorporated as a full-fledged city and was re-christened Kansas City. During the U.S. Civil War that followed a little more than a decade later, the region played host to a number of critical engagements between the Confederacy and the Union, including an epic struggle known as the Battle of Westport. Today, Kansas City serves (much like its sister city, Saint Louis) as a gateway between the eastern and western regions of the United States. Kansas City is known not only for its evolved jazz music scene and top tier athletics but also for its barbeque. Every year, Kansas City competes with North Carolina and Texas in an array of barbeque contests to determine which region boasts the most superior preparation of slow roasted meats. The metro area is home to some curious cultural treasures, including an innumerable array of fountains, the most famous of which is the fountain on Country Club Plaza. You can find great theater, music, ballet and opera here, as well. The Kansas City Repertory Theater stakes a claim as the most prestigious theatrical organization in town, but if you want a good dose of superior Shakespeare, you’ll have to shake on down to Kansas City in midsummer to check out the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Unwrapping the many pleasures and opportunities that Kansas City presents requires being organized. Whether you are a long time Kansas City resident (and Royals fan of course!) or you’re a traveler in town to visit relatives, you can use this site as a terrific resource to find what you need. From referrals to area lawyers and physicians, to recommendations for great dining and music, to links to critical city services and municipal information, this site has it all. Most importantly, it stays updated so that Kansas City visitors and residents can get reliable info when they need it. |
